Ok so I think I found my new favorite course. This place is awesome. Great layout and in great condition. We played Woodlands and Meadows and while we enjoyed both I thought Woodlands was better. Sounds like I need to make it back and play the lakeside 9 as well.
Got on for 35 bucks this morning by using LMG. Best 35 bucks Ive spent. _________________ Gold jacket, green jacket, who gives a $hit! - Happy Gilmore |

I just returned from a trip to Northern Michigan. We played 8 great courses all in great condition.
I find it interesting that of the 8, Shaker Run graded the best for design!
We played the Lakeside/Woodlands nines (by request) and I gave each 3 excellent and 6 good holes.
This course was designed in 1978 by my main man Arthur Hills.
This was before he had 5 other designers translating his vision.
I think it shows why I continue to seek out and play his courses.
He uses trees, water, sand, elevation changes, and excellent green treatments to design distinctive holes that fit the land.
Most of his pushing around dirt is to insure proper drainage, and not to make muliple moguls a la Mike Strantz or Pete Dye.
The finishing holes on both Woodlands and Lakeside are mirror images of the same great cape hole.
Bit off too much and you're wet. Don't bit off enough and you have a heroic second shot or a lay-up.
That is my definition of an excellent hole. Use your noodle as well as your driver.
Dr. Hurdzan did OK on the Meadows nine, but he didn't have the best land, and it just doesn't measure up to the others.
I played this time with a course marshall and he said,
"only people who don't request anything play the Meadows, because no one ever requests it."
The Woodlands/Lakeside nines at Shaker Run are a must play in the Cincinatti area !

Moe;
Please write something in 'Vacation and Resort' section about your Michigan trip. I would really like to read about it before next year!
Thanks;

Played Lakeside/Woodlands today in the freakin hurricane weather we had. Course looks great, easily the nicest course I have played. Wind was howling like crazy out there today especially on the finishing hole on each 9. Trees were falling over and huge parts of the trees were breaking off all over the course. It got kinda dangerous out there with all that going on. _________________ Gold jacket, green jacket, who gives a $hit! - Happy Gilmore |

I thought you were the only crazy person I knew of who played yesterday, then I got to work and found out a friend of mine was just as crazy. Unlike you, he didn't stick it out for 18. When the trees started coming down and he saw the damage to some of the houses, he headed home. _________________ "Although golf was originally restricted to wealthy, overweight Protestants, today it's open to anybody who owns hideous clothing." We tee'd off around 9:45am so it didnt really get back til halfway thru the back nine. We were already that far thru so we said the hell with it and finished out. I thought it was crazy that there was people just teeing off as we were leaving and thats when it was really bad. _________________ Gold jacket, green jacket, who gives a $hit! - Happy Gilmore |

I had the pleasure of visiting here for the first time on Monday.
They sell a nice product here!!
The people are friendly, helpful, and polite. every worker that drove by (and there are a lot of them) gave a smile and a wave. I was out at 7:50 so I seen all of them, but, when I came up on one, they always moved out of the way.
The course itself is in good shape. Tees looked good. A couple fairways had small areas where only 75% of the grass was green, but was of the same consistency. the greens are in nice shape and rolled true, I just wish they were a little faster. the contours of the greens are mostly very gradual, at least the parts I seen, and I love greens like that when they are fast.
Probably by today they will be done renovating the bunkers. all new sand and it's fairly deep. They started on the woodlands and were on #8 of lakeside fairway bunker as I passed. not sure if they are re-doing the meadows because he said they are almost done. or maybe the meadows is an afterthought.
I can see why this place get such recognition.
paid $39 before 8:00, woodlands/lakeside. paid $20 more to go around the meadows.

I got a notification from PGA Career Links, a PGA member info emailing/website, about career opportunities... the notification noted that Shaker Run was up for sale.
Of course I don't have the money to buy 1 hole, much less 27 holes....
But, a cool place nonetheless. _________________ Jeff Shelton, PGA

If you ever get the chance, play it. I was totally impressed. Lakeside/Woodlands was a fun, challenging test from the tips. Hole #5 the 203 yd par 3 on Woodlands had my "Wow" factor going and both #9's were incredible. Conditions all around were very very good. I'd go back anytime.
I've played Stonelick and enjoyed it very much, but Shaker Run IMO ranks a cut above in a true test of golf.
It's been a great month so far. AC/DC was one of the best rock concerts I've seen since the 80's and now having the pleasure of playing golf on one of Ohio's finest on a perfect weather day, man life is good. |

I finally played this course on Sunday morning. 70 bucks. It did live up to the hype I've read on here. We played the original 18. Conditions were as good as at Belterra, but the service could be a little better. Don't get me wrong, they were nice but they could take a few lessons from Belterra on customer service.
One problem I had was the GPS on the carts. Totally ghetto. I say get rid of them or do an upgrade. I loved every hole we played except for number 6 on Woodlands. It seemed too "gimmicky" to me.
Anyway, I'd love to play here again.

I have played Shaker a few times over the past couple of weeks, and unfortunately, it has seen better days. If anyone is planning on making any sort of trip up here to play, save it for another day. This heat is beating up our courses, and Shaker is no different.
About 4 greens on the Woodlands side are all but lost. A few tee boxes, particularly the back tee box on #5 Lakeside is a disaster. For the most part Lakeside is holding up pretty well, but Woodlands is hurting. The holes that get very little air movement (#2,3,5 and 6) are pretty bad on the Woodlands. The Meadows is a joke. They totally let the bunkers go this year. Supposedly they are going to get after them soon, but they have been like this all year.
I still love the course. The layout remains, but those conditions sure haven't. What a change from June to now. |
