Water Hazard

Have a question? Maybe someone has the right answer. Or just vent about how you were beat by some obscure ruling that doesn't make sense to you. Maybe someone can explain why!

Water Hazard

I can't seem to find this one in the rules, but I'm sure it's in there somewhere.

Let's say I'm playing a ball over a water hazard. I hit over the hazard, but it rolls backwards and into the hazard. It's unplayable. What are my options?

I feel like I'd get a drop/1 stroke penalty if I could drop from the point of entry, no closer to the hole. Is that right? If so, what if I could NOT drop without getting closer to the hole?

If the ball did not end up dry, by rule, you did not sucessfully cross the hazard.
Get your ass back over on this side.

First, you hit the ball over the hazard, meaning you cleared all hazard lines but the ball rolled back down a slope crossing back over the hazard lines into the hazard. Is the hazard marked red or yellow? On a water hazard marked red you have multiple options. You are able to take a drop from the last point the ball crossed the hazard, two clubs no closer to the hole, you may also keeping the spot of entry between you and the hole come back as far as you would like and drop. You may also retee or hit from previous spot. Hazard marked with yellow you must keep that hazard between you and the hole no matter if you crossed the lines but came back in from the other side. So here you would normally use a ball drop area.

Thanks guys,

After reading your posts, rule 26-1 seems much more clear.

There are designated drop areas for times where balls going long over a green end up in the grandstands.

What about hazards marked with red and yellow lines and stakes? What are those?

There are plenty of holes on Tour that use drop areas. 17 at Sawgrass is probably the most famous example.

Drop areas are usually a bit of a cop-out to make an especially penal hole a little bit more possible. Cherry Blossom uses a drop zone on the 12th hole, for instance. Without it, it's easy to imagine a group of high handicappers playing by the rules and taking 40 minutes to finish that par 3.

Still, I don't have a problem with it. The rules of golf allow for local rules and sometimes it's the only way to make a certain hole reasonable (again, see Sawgrass: 17th). Still, I prefer to see drop zones avoided and if you have more than one or two on a course you're probably also going to have playability and pace of play issues.

Okay, thanks for the info. That makes sense. What sparked this was a par 3 at Lassing Pointe(maybe number 5?). A buddy hit it over but it rolled back in. We had an argument about where he could drop. After we drove up to the green we noticed a drop area(if I remember correctly). It just seemed like a cop out.
