People's Top 18: Stonecrest

Postby thurman » Fri Feb 03, 2012 2:03 pm

Group 9 of the GKL People's Top 18 goes off today. Here's your chance to determine the best courses in the state! Next up...

Fore please, Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, KY.

If you've played it, you can rate it. Please use the following categories and rate on a scale of 1-5, as below (it's a tough scale, 3 is a pretty good score):

1 - Poor
2 - Okay
3 - Solid
4 - Very good
5 - Superb

Aesthetics – Is it scenic? Does the course “fit” its natural surroundings? Are the views unobstructed? Points off here for homes or buildings or power lines encroaching on the course, or other eyesores.

Ambience – Does the course feel “special”? Is it quiet? Is it a friendly, pleasant, or unique place to play in terms of atmosphere? Does it have intangibles that make you want to return? Points off here for loud highways, crappy customer service, pissy locals, and other things that negatively impact a course’s atmosphere.

Conditioning – Are the greens smooth? Do they run at the right speed? Are the fairways full? Does it play fast? Are the bunkers maintained? Points off here for slow or bumpy greens, dead spots in fairways, neglect, and unplayable bunkers.

Use of property – Does the course use its land well? Do natural slopes provide interest on shots? Are the course’s natural features used (water, trees, terrain, etc)? Does it drain well? Points off here for holes that ran out of room, constant drainage issues, unplayable slopes, wasted or misplaced features.

Risk/reward – Does the course give you opportunities to take a risk for some potential gain over the player who doesn’t take the same risk? Does the course extract a penalty if you fail? Does it make you want to hit dangerous shots? Points off here for forced conservative plays, cakewalk short par 4s and 5s with little danger.

Test of the full game – Can different types of players be successful? Does the course reward accuracy as much as it rewards distance? Is touch around greens as important as hitting strong full shots? Is putting as important as driving? Points off here for courses over-reliant on length, holes that don’t give short hitters a chance to put the ball in play, courses with interest tee to green but flat dull greens, etc.

Design variation – Is there a good mixture of short, medium, and long par 4s? Are the par 5s unique? Do you hit different clubs on the par 3s? Are there uphill and downhill holes? Are there doglegs left and right? Are different challenges present from one hole to the next? Points off here for repetitive shots, a ton of 380 yard par 4s, etc (note: It’s okay for a course to be cohesive. It’s ok if a course is “old school,” “wooded,” or “links style.” It just needs to present unique challenges throughout).

Memorability – Pretty simple: Do you remember it after you play it? Are there shots you replay in your head and think about before your next round? Do holes stand out for the right reasons? Points off here for forgettable holes or memorably bad holes.

5,5,4,4,4,4,4,5 = 35

Top 5 course! If you can't enjoy this, I suggest tennis!

But it is largely 'target golf'. I really enjoy trying all those fun shots, though. What an amazing use of a stip mined landform.

4, 4, 3, 3, 4, 3, 3, 4 = 28

It is an imaginative use of the strip mine.
Everyone should play it at least once.
Make sure you have food and water in the car!
Put it together with Twisted Gun for a real trek.

4,3,4,3,5,3,3,4=29
This is the area I am originally from and have played this course numerous times. This course just like Eagle Ridge will rank great but would you want to try playing this course everyday? Summer rounds can get miserable, no shade and on top of a mountain with the sun pounding you, plus all the down hill blind shots. Par 3's lack here big time, the first one #5 is a flip wedge over water, 8 is by far the best then 11 you cant even see the green from the back tee and 17 is crazy as well. The worst holes here IMO are 3,5,11,13,17. Love the course and what they have done with the strip mine as I think it benefits a small community. Oh, and the drive up the mountain, sucks!

No, you are right. Put me retired and playing regularly in E KY and I would play it only every 4 days. ER, SC, ER, HC, ER, SC, ER, HC .... etc. You betcha!

Stop in and play Paintsville Country Club for an old school feeling, plus they have 2 tee shots where you have to hit across the Big Sandy River, then take a swinging bridge across the river thats about 150yds long and just wide enough for a golf cart. Its a stop every true golfer needs to see. Then head on down 23 to Jenkins and play another Strip Mine course, Raven Rock.

ky;

Since you lived there, did you also play Twisted Gun? Moe is right [when senility isn't clouding his thoughts of course], it is nearly the course Stonecrest is, and even more spectacular scenery. But I found those 4-ft flags outre. Made it difficult to guess by sight the distances, I always was convinced the hole was further away. Fun trip.

But how could you not like #13 at Stonecrest? That is surely their signature hole. Funny on #17, I hit a club short and into the drink, then played the next club one SMALLER. It was a hard trailing wind and this time I purposely skyed it, ended up on the path behind the green. LOL

Eastern Kentucky is the best part of the state for golf, period!

An unfortunate DNP. Definitely want to get out to SC and ER this year. Been awhile since I have been to ER and SC needs a play.

Doug:

Yea I have been to Twisted Gun a few times, last trip was in 09 on the way to The Greenbrier. StoneCrest and Twisted Gun are fairly similar when it comes to the course and shots, both strip mine courses with elevated shots and drop offs. Another horrible location for a course but its a diamond in the rough! Yea the 4ft flags are a little deceptive and take some time to get used to.

Just not a fan of 13, no bail out period and if the wind is blowing your either in the hazard or OB. Just a very difficult tee shot for your average golfer. When it was first built they were recommended to shorten it to a par 3. I will admit, Eastern KY has its jewels, to bad there is nothing around for miles to support them!

Embarrassed to say I was stayed 3 days in Prestonsburg for a Little League state tourney about 6 years ago, had an 8:00 tee time and overslept. Ended up just riding up the hill and taking a car tour of the course. A couple of holes looked really interesting, especially the straight down hill par 4 (I guess it's a par 4). Doesn't Stumbo live in the house beside that hole?

This is one of my favs to play ANYWHERE!. I think its very playable for the average golfer. There are no trees and its very open. And its possible to put a good score down.
I cannot see anything negative about this course. The people are terrific. The price is wonderful. The course and the carts are great. Its beautiful!
I don't consider this as a horrible location. I travel from Dayton Ohio once each year to play there. It is NOT difficult to get to.
There are plenty of hotels and resturants that serve good food and cold beer nearby.
I LOVE IT!
