"The Michigan Golf Tour" (from the Ky / Tn area) by Moe Miller

I’ve now been golfing in Michigan long enough to plan the perfect golf tour. It might be a little too long for the average working stiff with a week’s vacation, but save your money, move those kids out, get the wife a golf coach and you too can go to golf heaven. Moe personally guarantees this tour between June1st and September 15th of any year.

If you go North I-65/I-69

Otter Creek G. C in Columbus, Indiana – A Robert Trent Jones Sr. masterpiece. Rees Jones added the East nine later. All 3 nines are great, but if you only have time for 18 hit the original course. As of this stories deadline, you could get on in the afternoon for $50. www.ocgc.com

For a course near Indianapolis go to www.indygolf.com and play any 4 star course. There are lots of them.

Cobblestone G. C. in Kendallville, Indiana (just north of Fort Wayne) - $38 weekday w/cart. www.cobblestonegc.com It's lots of course for the bucks!

If you go up I-75

Shaker Run G. C. Lebanon, Ohio is an Arthur Hills masterpiece! www.shakerrungolf.com

Play Woodlands/ Lakeside nines - do not let them put you on the Meadows nine !

Eastern Michigan golf (Northbound)

Shepherd's Hollow G. C. Clarkston, Michigan (just off I-75 north of Detroit). Art Hills 2000. www.shepherdshollow.com 27 great holes (play all day!) It gets crowded on week-ends.

Huron Breeze G. C. Au Gres, Michigan is just north of Bay City on Saginaw Bay. A bargain to introduce you to Northern Michigan. www.huronbreeze.com Don't be mislead by the first hole. The course ain't as easy as it looks, and small greens can kill ya!

Red Hawk G. C. East Tawas, Michigan. Art Hills 1999. This is why you came up here! www.redhawkgolf.net Cut from the forest. I hope you're not scared to be alone in the woods. We met the guy who donated the land for the course in return for a lifetime membership. He was driving around replacing water jugs and picking up trash ! I think he keeps the hired help on their toes. Ask about him when you're there - he wasn't young.

The Gailes Course at Lakewood Shores Resort, in Oscoda, Michigan is just up the road from Red Hawk. www.lakewoodshores.com This authentic Links course ( hidden pot and sod faced bunkers and creeks) will help you decide if you really want to go to Scotland. After my 97 I decided I didn't. Think of the money that saved me !

Forest Dunes G. C. Roscommon, Michigan (over by I-75) Designed by Tom Weiskopf in 2002 www.forestdunesgolf.com This new course is a nice layout in great shape, but it is expensive. You have about two years left to play it before it goes private.

Elk Ridge G. C. Atlanta, Michigan ( east of Gaylord - pronounced "Gaylerd" ) It is owned by the Honey Ham people. www.elkridgegolf.com The 10th hole bunker is shaped like a pig - don't get in that tail, but be sure to get a ham sandwich at the turn.

Black Lake G. C. Onaway, Michigan www.blacklakegolf.com It’s even further north ! This 1999 Rees Jones masterpiece has live targets ! It's owned by the United Auto Workers and is cheap to play if you take a retired UAW with you. The live targets are the swarm of workers that keep this place in perfect condition.

True North G. C. in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The course is north of town. It’s designed by Jim Engh and opened in 2004. www.truenorthgolf.com I haven't played it, but if Jim Engh does it, it's great! They may have twilight discounts for awhile and it will go private in a few years.

Western Michigan Golf (coming back down)

Bay Harbor G. C. is just south of Petoskey, Michigan. It’s Art Hills Michigan masterpiece www.Bayharbor.com Play the Links / Quarry nines if you can. It’s over $100 per round, but we played all by ourselves after 5 pm for $70.

Arcadia Bluffs G. C. www.arcadiabluffs.com It overlooks Lake Michigan south of Crystal Lake. This course has been compared to some REAL nice Links Courses.

Thoroughbred Golf Club at the JJ dude Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan. It’s Art Hills again. www.doublejj.com You can ride horses after your round!

Tullymore Course at St. Ives Resort near Stanwood, Michigan. ( north of Grand Rapids ) www.stivesgolf.com This Jim Engh design is a bear from the back tees – move up !

Thousand Oaks Golf Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It’s a 1999 Rees Jones design. www.thousandoaksgolf.com It has elevation changes, fast greens, and lots of Oak trees – wow !

Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend, Indiana is a 1994 Michael Hurdzan design. www.blackthorngolf.com Course has a nice variety of holes – some open, some wooded.

Back to www.indygolf.com for another 4 star course in the Indianapolis area.

Then drive on home and try to decide which of those courses was the best!

And of course when you’re in Kentucky and need to find a good golf course to play, just go to www.golfkentuckylinks.com and play anything on the MoeRon top 18!
